Our mental health is one of the most ignored dimensions of health. It includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act which would include our stress management, how we relate to others and our life choices. Our mental health is important in every stage of our lives and develops as we age into adults. Some of us lack the tools to develop in a healthy way and it shows as we become adults.

Prior to the beginning of my fitness journey two years ago I suffered from depression due to several life events. I gained excessive weight, failed major classes in college, my hair began to fall out, I was failing at my job, having relationship issues and it was all so overwhelming. I felt I lost complete control in every area of my life. I prided my physical appearance the most which greatly contributed to my self-esteem. When my physical appearance began to fail it impacted my mental state immensely.

When I started my fitness journey I also created a plan to get my life back on track mentally. I realized I had control of how I could make my situation better. My outlook on my life was based on one perspective but there were so many others to explore. I was exhausted from being so miserable. I was coasting through life with no vision for myself and allowing others to make decisions for me. I made the conscious decision to work to improve every dimension of myself. When I began working out it helped stregthen my mental stamina which I needed so desperately. We all fail at things sometimes but it is up to us to realign ourselves to become better. When we fall get up and try again. I’ve learned that some of the most challenging times in my life has produced a stronger version of myself. We have to understand why we are suffering and look beyond our circumstances. My journey has inspired so many other women who could relate to some of the trials I’ve dealt with. The journey you travel is beyond you. We all have a story and have the will power to produce a positive transformation. Our story helps us to improve, grow and learn. We also have the power to impact other lives during that journey.

During my journey I’ve rediscovered who I am as a person. I’ve reminded myself of what I like and don’t like. I’ve set specific goals for myself and my family. I’ve learned to be gentle with myself and love me for me. Sometimes it’s easier to love and accept someone’s flaws but not your own.

Your love for yourself sets the tone for your entire life and shows in every area in it. You have to want to do better, commit to doing the self work to be better and simply evolve.
